How to Work in Advertising with a Clean(er?) Conscience

Some were bothered about me bringing politics into my last HOW presentation. They said a design conference was no place for politics. I would argue design is highly political.
When we create identities that present certain companies as dependable and responsible, when they are anything but, we are complicit in rewriting their narratives. We cover up, repackage, and normalize their behaviors.
Brands tell the modern myths, and myths help form our own identities. This holds sway over decisions as far ranging as what car we buy, to what president we elect.
I don’t have all the answers about what we as a community can do to counter this (I have some), but I have many questions. During this talk, I will encourage us all to ask these questions as we go back to our offices and agencies.
I’ll share what me asking myself these questions has yielded; professional work aimed towards moving my clients towards more meaningful action, and side projects that have taken what I’ve learned in advertising to help change opinions about issues I feel are important.
